Yin Qiao San Lozenge

Yin Qiao San is one of the best-known formulas in East Asian herbal medicine, and many people know it as "Yin Chiao." It's built around honeysuckle flower and forsythia fruit. It's traditionally used to support the body's natural defenses and healthy respiratory function during seasonal changes.*

Each two-lozenge serving delivers 1.6 grams of concentrated herbal granules, equal to about 8 grams of raw herbs.

A seasonal classic, in a lozenge

The physician Wu Ju-tong first recorded Yin Qiao San in 1798. It went on to become one of the most widely used formulas in East Asian medicine. You may see it as Yin Qiao San (a powder), Yin Qiao Wan (a pill), or Yin Qiao Tang (a tea). These are the same formula in different forms. As a slow-dissolving lozenge, it's easy to keep in a bag or desk drawer through the changing seasons.

Traditional uses

In traditional East Asian medicine, Yin Qiao San is used to:

  • Support the body's natural defenses during seasonal changes*
  • Support a healthy immune response*
  • Support healthy respiratory function and a comfortable throat*

In East Asian medicine terms, Yin Qiao San is a cooling formula. It's used to "release the exterior" and "clear wind-heat." Traditionally, it's taken early and for a short time, when the body is first responding to a seasonal challenge and the picture leans warm instead of chilled. If you tend to feel cold, or aren't sure it fits you, ask your practitioner.

Who it's for

  • Adults who want seasonal support, especially during the change of seasons, travel, or busy stretches.
  • People who already know Yin Qiao and want it in an easier-to-take form.

The herbs

Jin Yin Hua (honeysuckle flower). One of the two lead herbs. It's traditionally used to clear heat and support the body's defenses.

Lian Qiao (forsythia fruit). The other lead herb. It pairs with honeysuckle to cool and clear.

Lu Gen (reed rhizome). Cooling and moistening. It's traditionally used to support fluids and comfort.

Bo He (mint). Cool and aromatic. It lifts the formula toward the head and throat.

Jie Geng (platycodon root). Traditionally used to open the lungs and guide the formula to the throat.

Niu Bang Zi (dry-fried burdock seed). Traditionally used to support throat comfort and clear heat.

Dan Dou Chi (prepared fermented soybean). Gently releases the exterior and eases restlessness.

Dan Zhu Ye (lophatherum leaf). A light, cooling herb that supports fluids.

Jing Jie (schizonepeta). Gently releases the exterior and balances the cooling herbs.

Gan Cao (licorice root). Harmonizes the formula and supports throat comfort.

How to take it

Let 2 lozenges dissolve slowly in your mouth, up to 6 times per day (about every 2 to 3 waking hours), or as directed by your healthcare provider. Do not exceed 12 lozenges per day. Use for 3 to 5 days, or as directed by your healthcare provider. Two lozenges provide 1.6 grams of concentrated granules (about 8 grams of raw herbs).

Ingredients

Herbal formula: Jin Yin Hua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos), Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Lu Gen (Phragmitis Rhizoma), Bo He (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), Niu Bang Zi (Arctii Fructus, dry-fried), Dan Dou Chi (Sojae Semen Praeparatum), Dan Zhu Ye (Lophatheri Herba), Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Herba), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma). All herbs are concentrated 5:1 granules.

Other ingredients: Isomalt, distilled water.

Contains: Soy (from Dan Dou Chi, fermented soybean).

Cautions

  • Isomalt and digestion. Each lozenge contains about 4 grams of isomalt, a sugar alcohol, so the full daily amount (12 lozenges) provides about 50 grams. At this level, isomalt commonly causes gas, bloating, loose stools, or diarrhea. Start with fewer lozenges, and spread them out through the day. If you notice digestive upset, cut back. If you have a sensitive digestive system, talk with your healthcare provider before using the full amount.
  • Contains soy. Do not use if you are allergic to soy.
  • If you are allergic to plants in the daisy family, such as ragweed, chamomile, or burdock, talk with your healthcare provider before use.
  • If you're pregnant, use this product only under the care of a practitioner. Talk with your practitioner before using it while breastfeeding.
  • Children should use this product only under the care of a practitioner.
  • For short-term use. Do not use for more than 5 days unless directed by your healthcare provider.
  • If you have an unexpected reaction, stop using the product and contact your healthcare provider.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
